The Red-breasted merganser(Mergus serrator) is a species of waterfowl. Males have a dark teal to black head, white neck, buff breast, black back, and grey barred belly. Females are brown, grey barred belly, and a eye stripe. Both sexes have a red bill and wispy crest down the back of the head. They breed in the northern artic, Canada, and Alaska. They winter on both the Pacific and Atlantic coasts. They live on open tundra lakes and on the coast. They have nests on the ground near water. They usualy build nests in dense vegitation. They are 23 in. long.
