The Ranongga White-eye or Splendid White-eye (Zosterops splendidus), is a species of white-eye in the Zosteropidae family.

Appearance[]

The Ranongga White-eye is a small 12-cm long bird with olive-green upperparts and banana-yellow underparts. A smudge of olive on the chest separates the yellow throat from the belly. It has a strong white eye ring and a patch of black from the eye forward. The bill is black and legs are orange-yellow.

Occurrence[]

Ranongga White-eye distribution map

Distribution map provided by BirdLife International.

The Ranongga White-eye is endemic to the Ranongga island of the Solomon Islands.

Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and their edges. It can also be found in old-growth forest and regrowth and thickets with scattered old trees. They seem to do poorly in scrubby habitats without large trees.

Voice[]

The song consists of about nine up-or downslurred notes. The call is a strong, two-syllabled “che-u.”

Conservation[]

The IUCN Red list lists the Ranongga White-eye as vulnerable as of 2016. Population trends for this species have not been collected, but the species is hypothesized to be declining due to the threat of habitat loss for gardens and logging.
