The oncilla (Leopardus tigrinus), also known as the northern tiger cat, little spotted cat and tigrillo, is a small spotted cat ranging from Central America to central Brazil. The word "oncilla" comes from Spanish oncilla which is a diminutive of onza which comes from Latin uncia meaning "one-twelfth part" which comes from the Latin word for one ūnus which comes from Old Latin oinos which is descended from Proto-Italic oinos which ultimately stems from Proto-Indo-European óynos meaning "one, single".
