The Kakapo (Strigops habroptilus), also known as Owl Parrot is a flightless parrot that lives in New Zealand, where it had few natural predators. However, the cats, rats, mice, dogs, and other invasive animals introduced by and coexisting with human settlers resulted in a massive decline in the kakapo population. The species has been saved by a captive-breeding program. The remaining 62 birds have been released on three remote, predator-free islands in an attempt to re-establish wild populations.[1]
