The Gray Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis), is a tree squirrel in the genus Sciurus. It is native to eastern North America, where it is an essential natural forest regenerator.
Etymology[]
The word "squirrel" comes from Middle English squirel which is borrowed from Anglo-Norman esquirel which is from Old French escurel which comes from a diminutive of Latin sciūrus. The word displaced Middle English acquerne which is from Old English ācweorna which is descended from Proto-Germanic *aikwernô.
Distribution[]
Eastern Grey Squirrels can be found in the US States of Michigan, Wisconsin, most of Texas, Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia, parts of Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and most parts of the US besides the Northeast, Virginia, Alaska, Hawaii and the West Coast. They could also be found in a very small part of Alberta and Manitoba in Canada.
