The Cuban Crocodile (Crocodylus rhombifer) is a critically endangered species of crocodilian that lives in the island of Cuba. Like all crocodiles, it uses rocks to break the shells so it can eat the clams inside.

Taxonomy[]

The genus Crocodylus may have originated in Africa and radiated outwards towards Southeast Asia and the Americans, although an Australia/Asia origin has also been considered. Phylogenetic evidence supports Crocodylus diverging from its closest relative, the extinct Voay of Madagascar, around 25 million years ago, near the Oligocene/Miocene boundary.

Characteristics[]

The Cuban Crocodile has numerous characteristics such as its brighter adult colors, rougher, more 'pebbled' scales, and long, strong legs which sets them apart from other crocodilians.

Distribution and habitat[]

The Cuban Crocodile can only be found in Cuba's Zapata Swamp and Isla de la Juventud. It used to ranged in the Caribbean because the fossils of Cuban Crocodiles were found in the Cayman Islands, the Bahamas, and the Dominican Republic.

The Cuban Crocodile habitats are freshwater swamps, marshes, and rivers.
