The common nautilus (Nautilus pompillius) is a cephalopod that is also classified as a living fossil. The nautilus aka Chambered nautilus has fossils dating back towards the Triassic period meaning it lived in the ocean during the era of dinosaurs and somehow managed to survive the mass extinction. As the most primitive of the cephalopods, the nautilus show a huge resemblance to the now extinct ammonites. Nautilus' live in the last chamber of their relatively large shell, whilst the other chambers are filled with its gas. It can control its buoyancy by adding or removing fluid from the chambers.
