Sphyrapicusis a genus of birds commonly known as sapsuckers under the family Picidae in the order Piciformes. The genus was first introduced in 1858 by the American naturalist Spencer Baird with the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. There are currently four species recognized under this genus: the Red-naped Sapsucker (S. nuchalis), Red-breasted Sapsucker (S. ruber), Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (S. varius), and the Williamson's Sapsucker (S. thyroideus).
Birds under this genus are characterized by their slender bodies, stiff tails, long wings in porportion to their bodies, and undulating flight pattern. As their name implies, sapsuckers feed primarily by sucking sap from trees.
