Penguins are among the most iconic of animal families, whether it be due to their adorable waddling or curious nature popularized by shows such as Penguins of Madagascar, or their incredible ability to survive in places as harsh as Antarctica. Contrary to popular assumption, only 7 of 18 penguin species live in Antarctica. In fact, penguins can be found from tropic areas near the equator to the icy sheets of Antarctica. They spend most of their time swimming gracefully to speeds of 15 miles per hour in pursuit of fish, squid, and crustaceans. On land, however, they are forced to clumsily waddle on their tiny legs or slide on their white bellies, a characteristic that catapulted them to fame in the human world.
