The Brown Honeyeater (Lichmera indistincta) is a species of honeyeater found across Australia, Papua New Guinea and Timor Leste. They are also in found in Bali.

Description[]

They are a small, grey-brown bird with a pale-grey chest. It has olive-colored wings and a yellow tuft behind the eyes, which happens to be its only distinct feature. Like other honeyeaters, it has a long, sickle-shaped bill that is made for feeding on flowers' nectar. Honeyeaters like the Brown Honeyeater have brush tipped tongues specially adapted for extracting the nectar from flowering plants.

The Brown Honeyeater as the name suggests feeds on flowering plants' nectar. They also feed on small insects while foraging within small scrubs and flowering plants either alone or in groups which can sometimes include other species of honeyeaters such as the New Holland Honeyeater in Western Australia (specifically Western Australia because unlike New Holland Honeyeaters, Brown Honeyeaters aren't present in Southeastern Australia).

Despite it's small build it has a loud musical call that can be heard clearly anywhere in the vicinity. They nest in the same area each year where a small cup-like nest is built on small branches hidden within dense vegetation. These nests are heavily guarded by the parents. Two or three eggs are laid, which the female incubates. When the chicks hatch both parents work to keep the offspring fed.
