The Botan Shrimp (Pandalus nipponensis) is a shrimp in the family Pandalidae found only in the south of Japan.
Description[]
The Botan Shrimps are dark orange in colour with dark reddish patches near their forehead horns. Their average body length is approximately 13cm but can grow to over 20cm in length.
Habitat and Distribution[]
The Botan Shrimp normally lives at a water depth of 300-500m along the continental slope of Japan. It is caught by bottom trawling from October to May by Japanese fishermen. Due to the decline of offshore trawl fishing, it is now only found at the off the coast areas of southern Japan.
Fishery[]
Due to the limted supply and the small size of the shrimp, it is rarely seen except at high-end restaurants. It is commonly eaten as sushi or sashimi.
