This October - Alliance with Dinopedia and other stuff going on in the wiki

Hi wiki editors! October has been a hectic month in the animal world and quite eventful for this wiki too. You all have been making major improvements to the wiki, and now it looks better than ever! I'm also going to be joining you guys on your toils when school permits, so I promise I'm not abandoning you!

I know people from Dinopedia have been been begging me to form an alliance with Dinopedia for quite a while, but now its finally happening. In addition, the Dinopedia admins are willing to donate some pages on extant fauna, so if you're interested in extinct creatures, you can help with moving them over to Animal Database! Hopefully, our alliance will mean a greater exchange of people and interests between wikis.

Of course, none of this wo…

October Big Day!

October 14 is Global Bird Weekend and World Migratory Bird Day. To celebrate, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's eBird is hosting October Big Day, a day where birders around the world can share their passions. Simply go birding anywhere and submit a checklist in eBird to participate in bird conservation and research! Every checklist submitted will increase your odds to win a spot in Cornell Lab's Joy of Birdwatching course. 5 or more checklists on October Big Day could win you a ZEISS DTI 1 thermal imaging camera, so don't forget to participate!

In addition, the Lab's Birds of the World is free from October 13 to 16. It provides highly detailed accounts of bird species supplemented with beautiful photos, so I highly consider checking it out if …

Gardening For Wildlife

Every year, people spend hours in their gardens pruning, trimming, and pulling away at the greatest sin a garden could have: disorder. The swaying limbs of conifers are trimmed into unnatural shapes, groundcover pulled out when they start to outgrow their 1x1 meter of allotted space, and acres of land are planted with grass seeds that take gallons of water to maintain. For years, we have been taught that plants in their wild state are ugly and unruly, but that is far from the case. People from all across the world flock to Mount Rainier in the summer just to see its beautiful wildflowers. The great, moss-covered boughs of the Hoh Rainforest attract hikers and migratory birds alike with its biodiversity. No one painstakingly trims each and …

Changes to Animal Database: Pop Culture, Main Page, and More!

Hello humans of Animal Database! As school is coming to an end, Animal Database's ban on pop culture is ending. This means that pages about movies, documentaries, TV shows, songs (e.g. "Roar" by Katie Perry), internet personalities (e.g. Steve Irwin), etc. that are centered around animals can now be made into articles instead of being restricted to blog posts. However, there are still rules that users must follow:

  • The content of said pop culture must be animal-centered (excluding humans). This means that Terminator 2 is not acceptable article content just because a single dog was featured. On the other hand, pop culture like Wild Kratts are acceptable because its purpose is to educate people about animals.
  • Separate pages describing the show and its…

Biodiversity of lagomorphs in China

In accordance with activities in zoological fields, we ought to identify priorities for further work in the name of nature conservation in this part of the world. Lagomorphs are one of the most neglected smaller mammals in terms of their study and conservation. We focus on asiatic fauna. Some of the priority species are chinese hare (Lepus sinensis), tolai hare (Lepus tolai) and category of the pikas:  highlander forms - Tsing-ling pika (Ochotona syrinx) and Kozlov's pika (Ochotona koslowi). More potential discoveries are on the zoologist’s desk, thus activities are needed. Some of the work is in the form of interviews, field transects and camera trapping technique i.e. in Daba Mountains, Kokonour or in fujianese wilderness. Let's do some …

Priorities for inventory of ungulates and monkeys across China

Fauna of odd deer species are still insufficiently known, especially as for Yunnan and Hupeh. Some records come from those regions for as yet unknown species. As for known species, in the fields of Yang-tze there are small species of a deer (Hydropotes), another species is recorded from mountains of Szechuan up to Fukien called the tufted deer (The Earth and Its Inhabitants 1891, China Journal 1926). The natural history of these creatures needs to be studied. Other diverse animals are monkeys recorded from various parts i.e. Kweichow (nowadays Guizhou) and from Shaanxi Province, where has been recorded a Holocene gibbon, species believed to be extinct. This kind of monkey was discovered on the basis of archeological studies in 2018 (in pap…

Changes to Animal Database Rules

Hello fellow editors!

It turns out that our previous set of rules (if anyone knows of them) have not been transparent enough with the recent copy-pasting going on. To combat this, I, Birds Forever, have updated our Wiki Rules to be more comprehensive.

Some major changes:

  • Formatting has changed to appear neater and information to be more accessible.
  • Animal Database's copy-pasting policy has changed.
  • Animal Database's policy on use of language has been updated.
  • Admin's Manual has been updated as well, mostly on promotions/demotions and page protection.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please be sure to mention Birds in the comments. Updates will be live by March 23rd and users found violating rules after this date will be atoned as describ…

This also includes wikipedia unless you are the original author and you have confirmation that you are. Also, you will get blocked if you either:

Animal Database Rules Draft: Opinions Welcome!

Animal Database does not have an official set of rules, except for the individual rules of the admins. An official set of rules would be helpful, especially to clear up confusion and conflicts across the wiki. Below, I have attached some ideas for the wiki guidelines. You opinions are greatly appreciated.

  1. Articles should be original, meaning they are rewritten so it is not plagiarizing the source. This is because (1), you are invalidating the effort the author put into writing the source, and (2), it gives readers no reason to visit Animal Database when they can recieve information from the source editors plagiarized from. I see this a lot on this wiki, especially when people copy-paste from Wikipedia. However, you may copy-paste articles y…

Just To Make It Clearer

We are not interested in adding any articles to categories involving movies, TV series or any other similar media. This wiki is meant to be about animals in the real world, not in the digital world. So please try to stop adding pages to those category pages or maybe start removing them because they do not contribute to what we are aiming for in this community. Please comment below for any category pages that you aren't sure about and I will try to sort this out and hopefully I can release and list of category pages that aren't needed in my next blog post. This list will also include categories with incorrect grammar and punctuation Eg. animals of south africa instead of Animals of South Africa

I want to become the newest administrator

Hey, I would like to become the newest administrator and bureaucrat. Animals and the fauna of earth is valuable to maintaining life on earth. And this wiki is basically a catalogue of all animals. However there are a few problems with the wiki that made me to write this. First, there has been an increasing surge of vandalism and I've found two now deleted vandalistic paragraphs on the sheep page. Twothly, this wiki has alot of admins that are inactive and only one admin is active daily and I think I can help the situation out a bit. Finally, this page lacks alot of pages on birds and insects and I want to grow this wiki. This wiki had a lot of time from its founding year 2009 to grow to a superwiki but it hasn't and this wiki needs to grow…

Just wondering if you don't know how to add photos or don't want to add photos to your own articles I could help out as long as you don't spam. They must have at least a simple infobox and a paragraph of text otherwise I may ignore it. Either send them to me or put the article in the category article that needs image. Obviously I would prefer not to do too many but if you really can't do it i can help but if you do know how to add images i wont bother, okay? Thanks in advance!!!!

Still as a Statue

I know plenty about night herons, but I didn’t know exactly how they hunt until my boat tour today. Looking out the window, I saw a few adults standing as still as stone by the riverbank. At first, I mistook then for statues since they were standing so perfectly still, staring at the water for prey. Until one twitched I knew they were real. I saw a few more, both adults and juveniles along the way back to the dock.

a small way to save the planet :)

recently, I've discovered a search engine called "Ecosia". Basically, it works just as google and other search engines work, but, for about every 45 searches, it plants a tree! now, you might be wondering "why are trees important?" well, here's why.

roughly every 45 searches, Ecosia uses at least 80% of its monthly profits to plant trees where they are needed most – in Burkina Faso, Madagascar, Peru, Indonesia, Morocco, Brazil, Nicaragua, Ethiopia, Tanzania and many more countries.

Surprizing Animal Cruelty

During my walk this morning to the marketplace (I'm in China currently, on a vacation), I witnessed a lot of animal cruelty, in public. First were the exotic birds for sale, all mynas, kept in filthy cages and in horrible condition. Their plummage was dirty and unkept, and they were all clambering and screeching, trying to get to freedom. The water was yellow with dust particles in it. There was only one perch and little flight room. I have never seen worse livng conditions for a captive bird ever. I hope these birds find their freedom, where they belong.

The second was fish and other aquatic creatures for sale. They were kept in crowded bins with little water. Some were injured and sick. After a fish is bought, it is slammed to the ground …

Under my vow to have a family sigil, as I am the Seven of Spades.

Growing up with my parents they've gotten pets for me, my sister and generally the whole family to enjoy. Those being hamsters, a bunny, a lasoapso, a bearded dragon and my grandmother has fish. While I'm still living with them I will buy myself a spotted plecostomus and name it "Gambit". I'll also buy a Monsignifer Lancehead Viper which will be named "Skulls" once I'm capable of living on my own.

After finding out that plecostomus' will live up to twenty years. I have planned to keep Gambit for 2-3 years then transfer her to my grandmothers fish tank for 3-5 years. I'll then have arrange with my mothers side of the family in Poland to have Gambit last and permanently. By then she should have had a nice and lofty life enjoying herself and …

Steadfast Multiple Reasons I Speak For Canidae

The reasons I speak for Canidae well some are emotional but some of them do a lot with the scientific stuff as I'm one of the people who care about the safety of wild canines. But understanding science isn't the only way I've had the luck to really understand wild canines with great insight some of my understanding does with seeing the similar issues the disabled class faces. It's the gray wolf I've understood since early childhood.
