The bighorn sheep is found in the mountain pastures and rocky cliffs of the Rockies. Superbly adapted to life among almost-sheer rock face, this sheep is agile enough to escape most of it's natural predators, including the cougar (mountain lion). The biggest threat to the bighorn sheep is humans, both through habitat destruction and sport hunting. The Black Hills subspecies of the bighorn sheep is already extinct.

They are found from the northern Mexican states of Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Nuevo León, Sinaloa, Sonora and Tamaulipas through the western United States and Canada, in California, Oregon, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Washington, South Dakota, North Dakota, Texas, through the Canadian provinces of Alberta and British Columbia.
