The Balearic shrew (Nesiotites hidalgo) is an extinct species of shrew from Majorca and Minorca, in the Balearic Islands of Spain. The word "shrew" comes from Middle English schrewe which comes from Old English screawa which is descended from Proto-Germanic skrawwaz which is ultimately from Proto-Indo-European (s)ker- meaning "to cut, shorten, skimp".
