The 'Alligator is a crocodilian in the genus Alligator of the family Alligatoridae. The word "alligator" comes from Early Modern English "alligater" which is a borrowing from Spanish "el lagarto" which is from Latin "lacertus" meaning "lizard" which is of Ancient Greek origin. The modern spelling is possibly influenced by the unrelated Latin "alligator" which meant "one who binds". The two living species are the American alligator and the Chinese alligator. Additionally, several extinct species of alligator are known from fossil remains.
