Acco is a male Australian Saltwater Crocodile and is the largest one in existence. He measures 4.9m (16.9 ft) and weighs 1,000kg (2205lbs).[1]
Steve Irwin caught Acco in 1988 because he was deemed a problem crocodile because he kept attacking people in Cattle Creek and was seen too close to civilization. Because of this many people in the area hired poachers to shoot Acco and sell his hide for leather. Steve would have none of it, so he went out there with his dog Sui and a video camera and filmed Acco for Episode 2 of his show.
Using a recently caught boar, Steve placed buoys in the water in an attempt to lure Acco out. Acco came out alright, and he started rocking the boat so much that Sui panicked, jumped out, and swam to shore leaving Steve in the boat to fight Acco. Acco put up a fight and started death rolling in the rope and he pulled so hard that the boat actually sank. Luckily, Steve jumped out in time and he and his team managed to get a line on shore and used a four wheeler to reel Acco in and place him into the trap.
Steve managed to relocate Acco to Australia Zoo where he gets a daily helping of boar to fill his insatiable appetite. Acco has had several nesting partners over the years, with Connie being the first until her death in 2004. Acco now nests with Cassie and they were most recently relocated into a larger enclosure, but still not far from where he would be brought out to perform in shows. Acco's relocation was the first time anyone moved him since 1988 when Steve caught him by hand.[2]
Acco's enclosure is famous for being the place that Steve proposed to Terri back in 1991.
The Croc Team needs to be extremely careful when feeding Acco because although Acco is big and bulky, he is extremely fast and can kill you in an instant if you make a mistake which is why all eyes must be on Acco for the duration of the show and while they are feeding him his boar.
